Anurag Singh Thakur, Union Sports Minister, opens the first BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships.

Today in New Delhi, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Shri Sports Anurag Singh Thakur inaugurated the BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships 2024. For the first time, the BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships are being held.

Speaking during the event, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur stated that 25% of the world’s population resides in South and Southeast Asia.

He went on to say that the Bay of Bengal area now serves as a hub for cooperation, advancement, and development in addition to being a place for travel and transportation due to the joining of the seven BIMSTEC nations.

The Union Minister continued, “This is precisely the thought that our honorable Prime Minister envisioned when he announced this sporting event at the summit in Nepal. It will help in not only deeper friendship but also building a deeper sporting culture, which will help deepen even friendship between athletes.”The group is organizing a sporting competition that will be held in India for the first time ever. At the 4th BIMSTEC Summit in 2018, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi made the statement regarding the same, announcing that India would host the BIMSTEC Youth Water Sports competition. The event was originally scheduled for 2021, but the outbreak caused it to be rescheduled for 2024.

Along with the Union Sports Minister, dignitaries from visiting nations as well as the Indian government were present at the opening ceremony. These included Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Nepal, Sh. Dig Bahadur Limbu, and Secretary General of the BIMSTEC, Sh. Indra Mani Pandey.

The Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Swimming Pool Complex in Delhi is hosting the first BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships from February 6–9, 2024. Competitions in swimming, water polo, and diving for the Under 20 age group will take place.
