The American IT giant HP has begun producing laptops and other computer-related goods in India.
In a statement released on Wednesday, HP stated that it has begun producing a number of laptop, desktop tower, and compact desktop models in India in support of the Central Government’s Make in India initiative. Currently GST on laptop is 12%

The government announced restrictions in laptop imports from November, 2023. Government also made it mandatory for the govt department to purchase Computer or laptop with Make-in-India (MII) with some percentage of computer components.

According to the corporation, these goods are produced at their flex plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, which is close to Chennai. A number of these products will be accessible on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) site and qualify under the government’s Public Procurement Order.

Since August 2020, HP and Flex have collaborated on business desktop production. Also Over 25 domestic enterprises have submitted 38 applications under the PLI Scheme 2.0 for IT gear, according to a press conference held by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of IT and Communications, on Wednesday. They are all motivated to introduce supply networks and ramp up production. Mr. Vaishnaw mentioned that laptops will be produced under the program by businesses including HP, Dell, Lenovo, Thompson, Acer, and Asus. Servers will be manufactured by HP, VVDN, and Lenovo. Apple and Samsung opted out from this scheme.

Currently, Asus sources nearly 80% of its production from China, with the remaining portion originating from Taiwan, Brazil, Europe, and Indonesia. Dell signed an agreement last year to expand its notebook production in the country under the PLI scheme.
